As a Filipino leader and independence fighter, I led the Filipino revolt against Spain rule. Two years later I helped the American attack on the Philippine Islands during the Spanish-American War. I was nominated president of the new republic after the Filipinos declared their independence in 1898. I, however, resisted American occupation and continued to lead against the United States forces until I was captured in March of 1901. I then took an allegiance to the United States and ran for presidency of the new Filipino commonwealth government in 1935, but I was unsuccessful. In 1945, during World War II, I was taken into custody by American troops and held on suspicion of partnering with the enemy during the Japanese occupation. After the charges against me were dismissed, I was appointed to the Council of State in 1950. I also succeeded in creating a Philippine revolutionary constitution, which was formed under the constitution as an effort for independence. I am also the only president of the First Philippine Republic.
I firmly stand against the annexation of the Philippine Islands. We demand freedom, and the annexation will not give it to us. The Spanish have no shame in exploiting the Filipinos. They call us "vile epithets" and even more insulting terms. The Filipinos need to rise and march under the revolutionary banner.
